On June 15, 2019, AB&I was proud to partner with newly elected Councilman Loren Taylor for his first annual Juneteenth in the Town held at the Eastmont Town Center. The theme for the event was Communities Coming Together for the People highlighted the diverse beauty of East Oakland’s community. AB&I CAP member Bishop Jackson opened the event with the history of Juneteenth which commemorates the effective ending of slavery within the United States.
A diverse group of exhibitors supported this year’s event including Kaiser Permanente, Gazzali’s (provided bags of fresh produce), Summit Medical and West Oakland Health Center (provided free on-site mammograms), Chabot Space and Science Center, Study Smart Insights, Oakland Public Library, Bay Area Urban Debate League, and Peralta Colleges (Laney and Merritt).
Various community services and elected representatives were also present including the City of Oakland, OPD, Assemblyman Rob Bonta, Supervisor Nate Miley and District 3 Councilmember Lynette Gibson McElhaney. AB&I joined AC Transit, OPD and the 2020 US Census Bureau in providing information for those seeking job opportunities. Jenny Landon and Zeydi Gutierrez talked to residents of the community about AB&I’s history, our products and the Open House that is scheduled for August 17th.
Councilman Taylor is only 6 months into his first term and he and his team are dedicated to addressing the issues in this district by uplifting the community.
